Owners of new debris landfills would have to inspect their dumps every day for signs of fires and devise plans to extinguish them quickly under rules proposed by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Landfill gets odor complaints

A dozen odor complaints have been filed in recent weeks by neighbors of a southern Stark County landfill where remedial work is under way.

The Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility in Pike Township is moving garbage from the southern slope of the older 88-acre section of the landfill in order to comply with orders from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Distribution of Countywide funds discussed

Although Tuscarawas County will receive a portion of  $3 million of a $10 million fine levied against Countywide Disposal and Recycling facility for violations, Tuscarawas County commissioners still oppose distribution of the remaining funds outside of the area affected by landfill nuisance complaints.

Stark landfill fires ’slowing down’

The fires at a landfill in southern Stark County might be slowing, but some problems are continuing, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says.

Volumes of leachate — landfill liquids — and hydrogen gas at the Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility are dropping, and that’s potentially good news, EPA staffer Joshua Adams said.
